How to tell which court you are in

The court is named on the ticket. If you cannot read it, the rule of thumb is geographic: a ticket written inside the Syracuse city limits goes to Syracuse City Court, and a ticket written anywhere else in the county goes to the town or village where the stop happened.

The complication is that villages sit inside towns and can run their own courts. Onondaga County has both a Manlius Town Court and a Manlius Village Court, at different addresses. Same for Baldwinsville and Lysander, Liverpool and Salina, Solvay and Geddes. Getting this wrong wastes a trip.

What changes from court to court

The statute is the same everywhere in New York. What differs by court is everything practical: how often the court sits, whether the prosecutor appears in person, how reductions are handled, and whether you personally need to be there.

Some of the smaller courts in this county sit only once or twice a month. That single fact drives most of the timeline in a rural traffic matter, a ticket that would resolve in weeks in a busier court can take months simply because of the calendar.

Most of the tickets we see in this county come off the same corridors: I-81 running north to south through Salina, Cicero and the city; I-690 and I-481 around Syracuse; Route 11 through Cicero and North Syracuse; and Route 31 through Clay and Lysander. Where on those roads you were stopped decides your court.

How do I know which court my ticket is in?

The court name is printed on the ticket itself. It is set by where the officer wrote it, not by where you live or where you were going. A ticket issued inside the Syracuse city limits goes to Syracuse City Court; one written in a surrounding town or village goes to that municipality.

How many courts hear traffic tickets in Onondaga County?

Twenty-six town and village justice courts, plus Syracuse City Court. That is why two drivers stopped a few miles apart on the same road can end up in completely different courts, with different schedules and different prosecutors handling the matter.

Why does a village have its own court separate from the town?

New York villages sit inside towns but can run their own justice court. Manlius, Baldwinsville, Liverpool, Fayetteville, East Syracuse, Minoa and Solvay all have one. So a Manlius ticket may go to either the town or the village court depending on exactly where it was written.

Do I have to appear in person?

It depends on the court and on the charge. In many matters counsel can file a notice of appearance and appear on your behalf so you do not lose a work day. Some courts and some charges do require the driver present, and you should be told which situation you are in before you hire anyone.

What if I miss my court date?

Do not let that happen if you can avoid it. Failing to answer or appear can lead to a suspension, and three or more such suspensions is one of the routes to a second-degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation charge under VTL section 511. Call the court or a lawyer before the date, not after.
