Central New York routes through Syracuse

Syracuse is not simply the largest city nearby. It is where the institutions that decide things for the whole region physically sit, which is why a matter that begins in Oswego or Cortland or Madison County often ends up here anyway.

  • The courts. Syracuse City Court at 505 South State Street, Onondaga County Court for felonies, and the Fifth Judicial District administering the twenty-six town and village courts around them.
  • The bankruptcy court. Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 cases for this part of the state are filed in the Northern District of New York, which sits in Syracuse, so a filer in Cortland County is coming here too. See bankruptcy.
  • The trauma center. Upstate University Hospital on East Adams Street is the region’s only Level 1 trauma center, and its regional trauma system covers fourteen counties.

That last one matters more to an injury claim than people expect. If a crash anywhere in Central New York is serious, the person hurt is very likely taken to Syracuse, and the Upstate records become the backbone of the claim, whichever county the collision happened in. It is one of the reasons a firm working this region needs to be at home here rather than only in one county.

Why people in Syracuse call a firm ten miles north

It is a fair question and it deserves more than a slogan.

Most of the county is not downtown. Twenty-six of Onondaga County’s courts sit outside the city — Camillus, Tully, Skaneateles, Clay, Manlius. A downtown address is no closer to any of them than Cicero is, and for the northern half of the county we are considerably closer.

You are not paying for a tower. Parking at our Cicero office is free, which is not a small thing when a matter needs three or four visits and the alternative is a downtown garage.

It is the same two attorneys throughout. This is a firm of two partners, not a practice where the person you meet is not the person who appears.

And we have done it from the same two communities since 2000, with 361 Google reviews across the two offices.

Questions from Syracuse

Do you have an office in downtown Syracuse?

No, and we would rather say so plainly. Our nearest office is in Cicero, about ten miles north, roughly fifteen minutes up Route 11 or I-81. Everything else about how a Syracuse matter is handled is the same, and parking with us is free.

Does it matter that my lawyer is not based in the city?

For the courts, no. Most of Onondaga County’s twenty-six justice courts are outside the city anyway, and a downtown address is no closer to Camillus or Tully than we are. What matters is who picks up the phone and who actually appears.

I was hurt in a crash and taken to Upstate. Is that relevant?

It often is. Upstate University Hospital is the only Level 1 trauma center in the region, so serious injuries from fourteen counties end up in Syracuse. Those records are usually the backbone of an injury claim, and they are worth requesting early.

Where do bankruptcy cases from Syracuse get filed?

In the Northern District of New York bankruptcy court, which sits in Syracuse. That is true for people across a wide area, so a filer in Cortland or Oswego County is coming here too. The meeting of creditors is normally the only appearance a consumer case requires.

Which court will my Syracuse matter be in?

Inside the city limits, Syracuse City Court at 505 South State Street. Outside it, the town or village court where the incident happened. Felonies move to Onondaga County Court. Every justice court in the county is listed with an address on our courts page.

What does the first conversation cost?

Nothing, and there is no obligation afterwards, whatever we tell you in it. Call (315) 698-9630 or text 315-345-4128. If your injuries make traveling out to Cicero difficult, say so on that call and we will come to you rather than have you make the trip.
