Fifteen courts, and eight of them share three villages
Onondaga County has twenty-six town and village courts spread across a populous suburban ring. Cortland County has fifteen, spread across a rural county, and they cluster in a way that catches people out.
- Cincinnatus hosts 3 of them — Cincinnatus, Solon, Taylor.
- Marathon hosts 3 of them — Freetown, Lapeer, Marathon.
- Homer hosts 2 of them — Homer, Scott.
So a summons naming a town you have never been to may well be heard in a village you drive through regularly. Freetown and Lapeer both sit in Marathon. Scott sits in Homer. Solon and Taylor both sit in Cincinnatus. The name on the paperwork is the town with jurisdiction, not the building you are going to.
Several of these courts have no street address at all in the court locator — Harford is listed as a PO Box. Others sit on state highways rather than in a village center: Cuyler on Route 13, Taylor on Route 26, Scott and Willet on Route 41. Cortland City Court and Cortlandville Town Court are different courts
This is the single most common mix-up in the county, and turning up at the wrong one counts as failing to appear.
